I was hoping for a basic pictorial look at Pullman cars. What the book gave me, in addition to the great pictures, was a history of the Pullman philosophy including the good and bad of car design, industry problems, and the demise of passenger traffic that paralleled Pullman. Not covered in much detail was the town of Pullman, but Amazon has other books that cover the town in detail. If you are interested in Pullman rolling stock this is the book for you. If you are interested in the history of Pullman as a business read that first and this book second. It gives you a better overall perspective.

This is a great book that any serious passenger train enthusiast should add to their collection. It is a complete and well documented look at Pullman cars and the Pullman Company from its inception to the end. Filled with photos and diagrams this is an excellent source of information as well as a good nostalgic read for those of us who miss the "golden age" of passenger train transportation in the USA

This book has many well reproduced color photos. I wish there were more of the insides of the Pullman cars and fewer of the outsides.Still, it's good that that this item is available, especially for those of us who regularly traveled in the Pullmans.

Very well written and illustrated book about the overnight sleepers of Pullman. The book outlines the first Pullman sleepers to the final cars produced. The various advances in comfort and luxury are well detailed in the book. It explains how the Pullman company operate in conjunction with the major railroads. There are many exterior and interior shots of the cars, the interiors many being period photos from their archive or marketing and advertising files. Recommend the book to anyone interested in the story of Pullman.

This is a very good book that provides numerous photo's that are not seen in other books covering the same subject. The quality of the book, as well as the information provided is very good and it makes a good addition to my railroad library. Also the price of this second edition reprint is very reasonable.

I have always been curious about Pullman cars since in my early years when I rode from Seattle, Wash, to Phila. Pa on the train with my mother and sister. As a teenager I rode with my grandfather from Newark, N.J. to Oak Hill, W.VA. on an overnight train. As a college student I rode a Parlor Car from Chicago to Red Oak, Iowa. I have always had the desire to see the many different kind of sleeping cars and this book has more than answered all my questions.One drawback is that some of the detailed layouts of pullman cars are so small, I need a magnifier to see all the details.Nevertheless, the text is easy to read and there is lots of information to read.I am glad that I made the purchase.

1940 was the first year that I traveled in a train. I went with my parents between Philadelphia and Chicago in a Pullman. We traveled in a 14 section. What a great adventure that trip was. As a youngster, I was hooked on riding in a Pullman and still am. Great memories flooded back as I went through this book. Clearly, if you have ever ridden in a Pullman this is the book for you! If you have even the slightest interest in train travel you will find this book a joy.My childhood love of train travel that developed in my youth, has also translated itself into HO model railroading as an adult. As you might guess, I model passenger trains. Besides building cars, I also detail the interiors of the Pullman cars. The typical train book shows exterior shots of an engine with any cars behind the engine fading in the distance. Black and white interior shots of Pullmans are few, if any. A color shot of the interior is never there. The Cars of PULLMAN changes the playing field in that there are ten or so COLOR photographs of Pullman interiors plus a great number of black and white pictures and drawings.Thank you Welsh, Howes and Holland for your great book! This is a book that I waited more than a half century for!

Somewhat of a departure from most of the other books I've collected, this one focuses not on a railroad or on types of trains but on Pullman cars themselves. The Pullman Company was an early innovator in developing comfortable sleeping cars, as far back as the late 1800s, and grew to be the dominant manufacturer, owner, and operator of sleeping cars and parlor cars--which it leased to the railroads themselves, often in the styling and colors of the rest of the given railroad's passenger trains. The detailed text is well illustrated with lots of black and white and color photos.

This book was written just in time. This book describes the racial, cultural and political divisions driving our country apart in the current age. This well researched book covers all of the reasons for the terrible divisions on the verge of splitting our country apart and possibly resulting in violence on a large scale. This may not be a happy book to read, however facing our problems and attempting to offer solutions after reading it will be well worth it if we act on what it teaches us. A Nation divided cannot stand. Read this book before it's too late.

This is a long read, HOWEVER, it really tries to document the ideas, symptoms and conclusions of a very fragile political scene. It goes into detail what is transpiring on both sides of the political divide and tries to draw conclusions that is scary but probably true. Solid, good information....

Though the title might sound crazy if you're not paying attention to politics, it isn't. The book is a gripping page-turner as the author looks into the near future - and we are headed for confrontation. He draws on his knowledge of US history and the history of Liberalism and Conservatism to paint a very credible argument for how our differences are truly irreconcilable. The author's explanation of the events before our first Civil War is very helpful. Yes, it can happen again. No, it must. He lays out the different half-a-dozen scenarios and how they go down - he rates victory by the Left as a likely one and military victory, less so. He includes several other separatist options that I found very interesting as I learned a lot about how politics works. And how it worked, and then didn't, before our first civil war. The author says he is working on a new, related book - political events are moving so fast that it will also likely be right on target.

I considered giving it only 4 stars, but then asked myself "why?" I couldn't think of a reason. He does an outstanding job of thoughtfully considering many possible scenarios other than civil war. His analysis of the different categories of ideological, and therefore, political thought, extant in the nation is both accurate and insightful IMO. He also considers the international ramifications of the potential armed conflict inside the US. I found some of his conclusions troubling. But, I had to conclude they were logical. Overall, an excellent analysis of the current situation in the nation, and the probabilities of various outcomes including civil war.

Not only that, but also what the future holds. The scenario of a civil war is very possible as I thought of it for years. I agree with the author , probably it is on the way.IMHO, the trigger will be hyperinflation caused by dedolarization, end of the dollar as the reserve currency of the world.The book is easy to read with solid information about the possible future of the US as a society.

This is a great book if you know the civil war is coming, which I believe it is. He goes into what it will look like when this happens. It was very informative and helpful. I'm reading the author's other book now.

Just finished this book, it gives a lot of excellent perspective and insight, in particular about to the true state of the culture war and what we are up against. Highly recommended!

I am an engineer and addicted to cycling. This is my kind of book. The bicycle has to be one of the great inventions of our time. The efficiency of it's design is truly amazing and it hasn't really changed much since the introduction of the "safety bicycle" in the 1880s. This book goes into a lot of technical depth on all things cycling. If you don't like a chapter, then don't read it. Every serious cyclist should read this book though to appreciate the genius and simplicity of bicycle design and how it gets us from point A to point B under human power.

I purchased this book with high hopes in learning how bicycles are designed from an engineering standpoint. I haven't read the entire book yet, but I skimmed it and it appears to spend a lot of time talking about human power and how it is used to make a bicycle move, not so much the design of the bicycle itself. I was looking for more design and engineering related data from this book not just statistics and data related to the act of bicycling, if that makes sense.Don't get me wrong its a good book if its what you wanted, it's just not exactly what I was looking for.

If you like bikes, REALLY like bikes, this belongs on your shelf.This is a serious scientific investigation of bikes, how they work, and the limits of their operation.I have never seen so much data about bikes and how they can be ridden assembled in one place.The theory and engineering of sub-assemblies is discussed, but this is NOT a book on bike repair.If you like working on bikes, this will explain WHY you do what you do to keep them running well.Right next to this book on my shelf is 'Bicycles and Tricycles' by Archbald Sharp, written 108 years before 'Bicycle Science'.Amazing: the more things change, the more they stay the same.Bike geeks: get both and enjoy!

I have used this book with students since my very first days of teaching in the late seventies. Any time a project was proposed involving human-powered motion the book came off the shelf and into the hands of the curious and ambitious group. From recumbents to cargo bikes to bicycle water pumps and so much more. This book is a gem. The best reference on my shelf.

I have BS2, but in June 2005 ordered BS3 think it is great. Lots of recent information, re-organized, and overall was an improvement over the previous 2 editions. I still find it useful to have an older edition around (e.g. BS2) to see how things have changed and new information on aerodynamics, nutrition, etc. have been discovered in the last 10 or so years.CAVEATS: --I was disappointed that aerodynamic research done with Lance and Steve Hed etc. were not included. --For practical advice on training, nutrition, aerodynamics advantage of certains pieces of gear, seat height, etc., I recommend ED Burke's books, such as 'Serious Cycling', 'High Tech Cycling', etc. --For specific training plans I recommend Chris Carmichael's books. --For repairs, I recommend the books from Park Tools, and Barnett. --A collection of Gene Sloan's repair books not only gives great advice, but also lets you see how various components have evolved over the last 20+ years.Still, an entertaining book for those of use who wonder about the affects of bearing friction, mechanical loads, etc. and the affect it may have on our riding.

It's certainly not the simplest or easiest book to ingest, but if you take it for what it is - a compilation of known science on the various aspects of the seemingly simple thing that we call a bicycle - it delivers. This is (absolutely!) not the book you need to fix a flat, nor to tune your hydraulic suspension; but if you are involved in research and/or development in cycling or human-powered vehicules, this is the best way of getting up to speed on the state of the union. Material depth varies from chapter to chapter, sometimes with good reasons (stability and dynamics are certainly not as easy to summarize as power calculations); there are certainly many topics I would have liked to see expanded; but that's the nature of such a book.

Almost 2 years after graduating from seminary, I audited a Greek class and felt a little defeated at how much leaked out of my head. After hearing that story, a friend of mine suggested this very book. Post seminarians are busy and need something that is very quick and effective and I believe Dr. Kline has produced such a thing. From 10 seconds on the low-end to 5 minutes on the high-end, the student gets to decide how much they can take in daily, with even 10 seconds a day being effective at slowing the leak. Once getting into it, one tends to read several days in one sitting. I also appreciate that the cover of this book is hard and will last a long time.

I wish this book would have been around 30 years ago! This is a great way to review Greek.

The most important practice for maintaining and increasing one’s understanding of the biblical languages is daily engagement with the language itself. That’s right. It’s as easy as daily use of the language. Still, for most students of the biblical languages (past or present), there are two common hurdles to overcome—time and direction. It is for this reason, that I can think of no resource more essential to students of the biblical languages than The Two Minutes A Day Biblical Language Series compiled and edited by Jonathan G. Kline.The Two Minutes A Day Biblical Language Series has been specially designed to help readers build upon a previous study of the biblical languages by facilitating daily engagement in an easy, manageable, and spiritually enriching way (p. vii). The series is comprised of five handsomely produced, durable imitation leather volumes: Keep Up Your Biblical Hebrew in Two Minutes a Day: Volume 1 & 2 (forthcoming), Keep Up Your Biblical Aramaic in Two Minutes a Day, and Keep Up Your Biblical Greek in Two Minutes a Day: Volume 1 & 2 (forthcoming).The organizational structure of each volume in the series is identical. Each volume contains 365 sections for review in a single-page devotional style format. To encourage the readers to spend regular time with the biblical languages, each page includes a day number (from 1 to 365), a date (from January 1 to December 31), and a week number (from Week 1 to Week 52). The format of the content for each entry includes an English translation of the passage (NRSV, ESV, NASB, NIV, CSB, and MLB) with vocabulary words bolded for contextual recognition, new vocabulary words with both transliterations and definitions, a biblical language presentation of the passage, and a side-by-side breakdown of the passage with both biblical language and translation.Keep Up Your Biblical Hebrew in Two Minutes a Day: Volume 1 was created with consideration of the main frequency list of vocabulary found in The Vocabulary Guide to Biblical Hebrew by Miles V. For ease of reading, Kline has removed the Masoretic accents and Ketiv forms, including only the Qere forms. Lastly, it should be mentioned that the Hebrew text referenced in this volume is taken from the Michigan-Claremont-Westminster Electronic Hebrew Bible, which is a public domain text that is based on the BHS and compared with the Leningrad Codex.Keep Up Your Biblical Aramaic in Two Minutes a Day offers readers, in order of descending frequency, every word in biblical Aramaic. The volume is shaped in conjunction with the lexical forms, glosses, and frequencies of the incredibly useful Biblical Aramaic: A Reader & Handbook by Donald R. Vance, George Athas, Yael Avrahami, and Jonathan G. Kline. Students of biblical Aramaic would do well to purchase this volume if they haven’t already. The Aramaic text used is likewise from the Michigan-Claremont-Westminster Electronic Hebrew Bible, and, for ease of reading, Kline has likewise removed the Masoretic accents and Ketiv forms. The approach that Kline took concerning the descending nature of the volume is especially helpful considering the number of hapax Legomenon present in the Aramaic passages of the Hebrew Bible (more than one-third of words in biblical Aramaic).Keep Up Your Biblical Greek in Two Minutes a Day: Volume 1 was created with consideration of the main frequency list of vocabulary found in Complete Vocabulary Guide to the Greek New Testament by Warren C. Trenchard. Kline has taken the 365 most frequently occurring words in the Greek New Testament—all words that occur 42 times or more, plus about half of this that occurs 41 times—and curated a list of passages for readers to engage each day. Mastery of these 365 words will not only allow readers to engage biblical Greek with more proficiency but afford them knowledge of nearly every lexical form assumed by The Greek New Testament: A Reader’s Edition. The glosses are abridged entries of Hendrickson’s Compact Greek-English Lexicon of the New Testament by Mark House, with occasional contextual modifications from Kline. The Greek text quoted in this volume is The Greek New Testament prepared by B. F. Westcott and F. J. A. Hort, which is a critical edition of the Greek New Testament published in 1881.There is much to be praised about this series and the two forthcoming volumes. I’ve already voiced the necessity of these volumes for readers looking to remain in contact with a study of the biblical languages. There is absolutely nothing like them on the market and Kline is to be commended in the highest regard for his work here. The format is both easy-to-use and inviting. Thus, not only has Kline created a space for readers to enter their needed engagement with the biblical languages, but he has made it both exciting and immediately rewarding. Additionally, these volumes are the quality construction that many have come to expect from Hendrickson Publishers. The cover is a supple imitation leather over board, which provides both the functionality and durability that will withstand daily use for years to come. The paper is also thick and opaque, and the text is easy to read. Lastly, the inclusion of two ribbon bookmarkers per volume compliments the overall approach of the series and offers added usefulness that readers are certain to appreciate.The Two Minutes A Day Biblical Language Series compiled and edited by Jonathan G. Biblical Greek is a language that has proven difficult for many. Yet, it is a wonderful skill to have in the study of Scripture and it can unlock depth of understanding for that stick with it. However, like any other skill, if it is not practiced often much can be lost. Enter Keep Up Your Biblical Greek Volume 1 & 2.These books are designed to allow those who have studied Greek to maintain what they have learned in a few minutes a day. Each day has a passage of Scripture in English and Greek with certain Greek words highlighted and explained.Wanting to learn Greek I have heard that those who do not use it consistently loose much of what they have learned. Thus I can see how resources like these will aid those in Greek studies greatly. What is also appreciated is that this is not solely a vocabulary builder. Rather it is using context to build vocabulary and at the same time increase retention of words previously learned.The size of the volumes also makes transporting them much easier. There are not textbook in size but are compact enough to achieve their stated purpose. That is a nice benefit as a large volume may give cause to leave there where they may be forgotten.There is also a book mark to keep your place as well as dates at the top to keep track of progression. While it is not necessary to use the reading suggestion it is nice to use as a potential devotional alongside an English devotional.As to the books themselves, the bindings are strong and should long after much use. The paper is a good opaque color which could provide some room for notes for those who write to learn. I was surprised by both of these as I could tell that there were printed with use and readability in mind.It is also important to note that both volumes are similar and one is not verbs and the other nouns, for example. Each volume could be used independent of the other but having both volumes will increase more passages to study and words to learn. There is also a Scripture reference guide in the back for those wanting to look at a certain passage for study.All this in mind, these volumes will be a great resource for those wanting to keep the Greek they have learned and add to their knowledge of Biblical Greek.*I received a review of these resources for my honest review.

Dr. Jason Lisle is the Director of Research and a featured speaker and writer for the Institute for Creation Research. He previously served as the Planetarium Director for the Creation Museum in KY. This is a well written and informative book on the fundamentals of logic, making a logical case and identifying and dissecting logical fallacies. The focus of the book is on logical fallacies employed by Darwinism in the Creationism v. Darwinism debate, however the fundamentals learned are useful in spotting logical fallacies used in many other hot button issues. Ex: "We need common sense laws to stop gun violence" (fallacy or reification - giving something inanimate concrete characteristics - guns cannot commit violence, people commit violence using guns). What is especially useful is the list of logical fallacy examples and test at the end of the book - this allows the reader to practice what they have read to reinforce the learning - brilliant. Thank you Dr. Lisle for an excellent book.

A book for those that are truly seeking the truth and are willing to face the truth without shying away

Jason has a great ability to articulate these topics, of course he has been at it for a while, but none the less excellent.

This book breaks down arguments in ways that make it easy to see where reasoning can be detailed when debating issuesGreat work!

I like this book. It gives a nice introduction to logic, and especially to logical fallacies that one encounters when defending our true origins to those who reject the historical and scientific evidence.If you already have the author's pocket guide to logic, then be aware that this larger book is essentially a more fleshed out version of the smaller one. I read the smaller book first, and this one didn't really add a whole lot that was new.There are also 40 some pages of examples and explanations that are presented in numbered-paragraph format. It's not the sort of material one just sits down and reads through. I skipped by it. Some might find it helpful though.There's also a very nice appendix at the end giving all the formal names of the various fallacies. The list includes the Latin names, and I like having that list as a reference.

Very thorough explanation of logical fallacies. I found the real life examples to be very helpful. So thankful for for this book!

Really enjoyed this book. The author does a good job explaining the major logical fallacies and identifying them in debate
