"The Quiet Don is a triumph. Matt Birkbeck provides a stunning work of investigative journalism that is memorable and alive and unveils the incredible life and legacy of one of the mobs most important powerbrokers."—Nicholas Pileggi, author of Wiseguy and the screenplays for Goodfellas and Casino“This fast-paced, captivating probe into the life of Russell Bufalino fills a major gap in the annals of organized crime and shows us why his story continues to matter so much today. This book is not a saver for my tastes. I don't feel I really learned a lot about Russell Bufalino. I also found the chapters skip from one subject to another and then back to a previous subject. I did find it interesting that Frank Sheeran's version on his involvement in the murder of Joey Gallo and Jimmy Hoffa coincide with Sheeran's version in "I Heard You Paint Houses." However, I won't add this book to my library on true crime.

Johnny Irish has read upwards of 100 books on drug dealers mafioso's and all kinds of criminals. This book is very informative it explains to you how Jimmy Hoffa was tied into organized crime on the East Coast, even though he was a Detroit union associate many people wouldn't even know where Scranton Pennsylvania is I recommend a drive-through the Scranton Wilkes-Barre area of Pennsylvania in the fall the leaves on the trees are quite panoramic and you'll appreciate the book more if you see the area of the country where this man's base of operations was you be quite surprise Angelo Bruno was always referred to as the quiet Don so I guess you could call Russell.extra quiet Don it's still a good read one of the best available now I recommend it to all organized crime aficionados perhaps a movie is in the making I wonder who Hollywood is going to pick to play Russell respectfully Johnny Irish

The subject, Russell Bufalino is very interesting, however this book reads more like a historical account. It lacked personality in my opinion. That could be the ultimate nod to the subject who lived his life on the down low. I found there was an inordinate amount of innocuous info in it about Bufalino's associates and I would have liked for a more in depth bio of Bufalino. It's still worth the read for people that are not familiar with Bufalino and his massive influence on organized crime in the 20th century.

This is a must read for anyone interested in the Mafia in the US. It is also a must read for any resident of Pennsylvania, who should be made aware of the corruption in state politics. Bufalino's career extended far beyond the garment factories of Scranton/Wilkes-Barre and into the national spotlight. His influence also extended well after his death, as Birkbeck expounds upon. Very interesting read, and an eye opener for sure.

A lot of info about his associates, more than about him and a lot of it after his death. The one story about the Joey Gallo murder was way off base. The author implies that it was a set up by Buffalino. Every other scholar writes that it was "hit" of opportunity when he was seen in the early morning hours at a last minute meal celebrating his birthday.

Welcome to Northeastern Pennsylvania (among other places) where mafia influence was less glamourous but just as insidious as major cities like New York. Behind the scenes, Russell Bufalino ran an empire with his hands in everything from gambling to garment production to murder. This book documents the many and varied connections of Bufalino that reached into the highest political offices of the land. And that's what the book is most interesting. Whether it was Richard Nixon or former Pennsylvania governor Ed Rendell, the prints of the mafia are everywhere. Read this book if you'd like to know "what was really going on." It is fascinating, if a bit dry and repetitive at points. Stick with it for that info you need or want.

I fear for author Matt Birkbeck's life. He has told a remarkable story from an investigative reporter's view, and has convinced me and many others that the Mafia is alive and well. I live in the county where they are strong. Our public library cancelled his appearance and interview, as did our local public television station. It seems that they must have been pressured by someone not to have him interviewed. When you read this book you realize that our government is not solely entirely in control of our country. There is a sizable group of people who can and do manipulate things. Frightening.

The Quiet Don was an easy read. It was unbelievable in that there were so many revelations concerning the workings of Mafiosi in the Northeastern Pennsylvania area. I grew up in Northeastern Pennsylvania and was totally oblivious to any of the activities of Russell Bufalino and his influence in this area of Pennsylvania. I did, however, recognize the names of other Mafiosi dons and knew some of their history. It was interesting to finally know who killed Jimmy Hoffa and how that was accomplished. I would recommend this book to anyone who is interested in the working of the Mafia as it related to the local history and the history of our country.

I finally received this book on December 28, 2013 and yes, it was well worth the wait! Six generations of true organized crime is a page turner in itself, but add the true life story of Russell Bufalino, and you will probably read this book as fast as I did! From business deals to politics to contacts reaching high government officials...a great read! Very enlightening! The author worked on this novel for six years. Well written and well researched! I highly recommend this book!
