I purchased this book because of a review in the "Wall Street Journal." I love reading a book that I can't put down. The beauty of the writing grabbed my attention at the beginning, but it didn't demand my attention throughout. Perhaps, it became too ethereal for me. To be fair, I have to confess that I am not a "birder."

The bk was a gift for my birder wife. She rated it 2, "really purple prose" - but she wants to give it a 5 as well because the prose reminded her of our trips to Africa. She got out a few bird guides and spent some happy hours remembering the birds we saw!

An excellent read for any birder or reader interested in the natural world. Beautiful, poetic prose invites re-reading and writing out quotes to savor.

If you like multiple metaphors, hyperbole, and lack of action on every page, this book's for you. I struggled to turn each page because the reading was painful, and I could not get past page 80.

I love reading of pros writing about their expertise. I would have enjoyed more in depth information on the bird, habits that make it unique, nest construction, who keeps the eggs warm, how do they protect the fledgling. Still, an admirable study. Larry Benz

I would have been very interested to read an account of the search for this rare bird. I was eight chapters in when I gave up. The writing is so self-consciously arty and dreadful that it suffocates the main story. This author thinks he's a deep thinker and a writer of great skill. He is neither. This is his first book -- I hope it will be his last. He needs to stick to designing "special buildings" and bird-watching. I hope this book was sold mostly in electronic form. I hate to think of trees dying for its publication. If you like meandering "wordsmithing" that doesn't quite work and wide-ranging shallow thoughts on the human condition, this is the book for you.

This is definitely a different approach to nature writing. It is not so much a bird book as a meditation on nature, man's place in it, and the beauty of knowing that there is still wilderness out there in the world—and species that have never been seen before. In this era of ecological doom and gloom I found that quite refreshing! Head's book is quixotic—by the end, I came away with the feeling that it was the journey and the quest for the nightjar that mattered, not whether or not the sight it. But I don't want to give away the farm! I'll only say that I was pleased with the ending.
