#264,205 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

I will explain my three-star rating as an average: some of the 734 items contained in this collection are more than deserving of 5 stars, while others are barely deserving of 1 star; averaging them out yields 3. I would still recommend this collection for purchase, but I would also caution that the reader use discretion.First, the good: there are many devotional writings of Saints, Novenas and other prayers, sketch biographies/hagiographies, as well as some other true classics contained herein. I also greatly appreciate the inclusion of the original Nihil Obstat/Imprimatur where the essays had them. Having them all in one place more than justifies the very small purchase price of this eBook.Next, the bad: there are many polemic, saccharine, ham-handed, and/or just plain badly reasoned and badly written pieces that the reader should avoid at all cost. It is certainly possible to proclaim the truth badly, and some of these essays do it supremely badly. Remember that a Nihil Obstat is only a declaration that nothing within stands opposed to the Faith-- it is not a recommendation or a guarantee of high quality. Particularly irksome are the 1950's "novellas" with fictionalized and badly moralizing plotlines and dialogues on various subjects-- usually aimed very clumsily at "teenagers" (if you watched "The Waltons" in the 70's and 80's and your favorite part was when John Boy inserted a self-righteous little voice-over, you might like them.)Also of very little use are the various essays on other religious groups and Christian denominations, which, besides their clumsy polemic, general tone-deafness, and lack of respect as a criterion for genuine dialogue, are in general quite outdated. No group is static, after all, particularly Protestant denominations which are, by definition, "semper reformandi".Two final categories of materials into which the discerning reader should proceed with caution are those that (1) address topics of popular morality on which the arguments are now better-understood and better-framed than they were at the outset and (2) are outright hostile and argumentative in their tone.A large number of essays, for example, are replies to the specific 1960's and 1970's talking points of the sexual revolution and such mid-century phenomena as the spread of no-fault divorce or elective abortion, which at this point have been completed, tragically, more or less throughout the Western world. These must be considered in context of the times, themes and events when they were written. While the moral teaching at the core of these essays is certainly still correct, the issues and arguments have developed and become much more sophisticated since the mid-20th Century. Any discussion of Catholic teaching on sexual morality is now utterly incomplete, for example, without including the insights of St. John Paul II's watershed "theology of the body", also called "catecheses on the Book of Genesis"; similarly, no pro-life argument would be complete without consideration of Evangelium Vitae; yet these postdate all the material in this collection. A modern presentation of Catholic moral and social teaching must be presented using the best possible reasoning and in response to the present situation, not the situation 40 or 60 years ago. With respect to the second category-- essays whose tone is outright hostile and argumentative-- if nothing else can be said, it is at least that, while these variously dated, sloppily reasoned, badly framed, and/or polemic arguments should be considered, they should not alone form the basis of effective teaching or argument, as neither hostility nor patronizing are ever very convincing. St. John Chrysostom remarks concerning the Sermon on the Mount that the Lord begins with "Blessed are..." before he makes his way to tougher teachings like divorce or judging others, and also that St. Peter, in his speech on Pentecost about the crucified and risen Lord, when the audience might contain many of those who had earlier shouted, "Crucify him!", leads with "whom you saw crucified" and not "whom you yourselves crucified" so as not to alienate them-- and 3000 people were baptized that day. The framing of an argument is nearly as important as the argument itself-- and this is where some of the essays in this collection fail quite spectacularly.Last of all, the technical. This is a very eclectic collection that is, unfortunately, sequenced in a very haphazard order. Pieces about St. Padre Pio, for example, occur near the beginning, scattered through the middle, as well as near the end, rather than all together, as one would expect. I would greatly appreciate a TOC that was re-ordered and organized by author, where possible, and otherwise by topic or genre, so that, for example, all the writings of St. John Vianney or St. Alphonsus Liguori would be together in a single chunk, or all the writings on the Eucharist, all the biographical sketches, etc., appeared together. Even better, and I am not sure if the Kindle software even supports this feature, would be a sortable TOC that would allow the reader to sort by author, subject, genre, etc. There you have it. I recommend this collection to my fellow Catholics and, in general, to any person hoping to deepen their faith through reading, but keep in mind the caveats listed above. Make room as you read for the voice of the Holy Spirit, that it not be drowned out by poor reasoning and bad prose; weigh the essays in this collection critically against the light of Scripture and Tradition; and in general stick to the authors whose names are preceded by "Saint" or followed the initials of an Order.

This is an excellent collection of writings from the pre-Vatican II era of the twentieth century. It is so great to see the solid faith and doctrine of the mainstream Catholic Church at that time. If the person who gave this collection only one star would look at the "look inside" feature of this Amazon book, he would have some idea of the wonderful contents on all types of Catholic subjects. There are articles by many great Saints and Priests. I have been reading this collection for many days and have not even covered ten percent of it. I skip the articles that don't interest me, and there are plenty of writings that do enlighten me. This is great spiritual reading. It gives an idea of what the Church used to be like and what it always used to be like in people's lives. I read many classic Catholic books on Kindle, and am very happy to have found such an abundant source of satisfying reading for almost no money. I would recommend this collection to anyone who is interested in learning about or growing mature in the Faith.Update: I have been reading this book for a month and am now at 30%. I have learned things not a few. It's great to see discussed doctrines that have been around for twenty centuries that are rarely taught by the modern Catholic church. Like "The Catholic Church is the One True Church founded by Jesus Christ", and "There is no salvation outside of the Catholic Church" -- even though many non-Catholics are saved as well. It is just lots of great teaching. I am so glad I go to a traditional Latin Mass that uses a 1962 missal. Find one near you at traditio.com. Or just start reading these articles from the thirties and forties. The mainstream Church was so great back then. Just look at what has happened to our teachings, our Protestantized "priests" and our Mass since Vatican II in 1965.Update: I have been reading for almost two months for at least a few hours everyday and am now at 44%. This was a huge file to download to my Kindle; it took about three minutes to download when normal books take only a few seconds. This reading has broadened me with a much fuller view of Catholic Life than before I started reading; I found I was unaware of so many things that are apparently essential to Catholicism. The secret to sticking with this book is skipping articles that are not of interest. There are tons of other interesting writings to enjoy.Update: I have been reading for three months and am at 70%. This is a very holy book. It shows the strength and import of Catholicism and Catholic Life. I have definitely progressed intellectually and spiritually in many significant ways since I started reading this Collection.Final Update: I finished this Collection in four and a half months. It certainly is a major milestone in my life by fortifying my faith. It was great to the very end. I hope to continue to find other great classic Catholic writings on Kindle for my PC. This book should be a great blessing to those who read it, and a great deal of credit goes to the people who edited and compiled this Collection, Catholic Way Publishing.

This collection is truly outstanding. Written by Saints, Popes and various great Catholic authors. Must reading for any Catholic. I've never seen a deal as good as this!!! 734 essays and novels on many interesting topics for only $1.99!!! You can't miss on this one! Even if you aren't Catholic, for this price you can afford to find out what Catholics REALLY believe, and not what you've been told!!! There's a lot of anti-Catholic bias out there masquerading as truth. If it was truth, where is the love for your brother and sister that we are called to? Just asking!!!

This collection of essays and novellas is wonderfully challenging and accessible, erudite and popular. There is something for everyone here. I especially enjoy reading the pre-1940 essays for their emphasis on classic Catholic approaches to the problems of life. Having endured a recent loss, I found much consolation here in essays on why suffering is actually a grace and a spiritual blessing. Some authors are so fascinating to discover that I want to find other books by them. I am learning so much about my faith from this bountiful collection. This Kindle book is now a part of my mainstay nighttime reading.

I downloaded this book to my Kindle DX and Kindle Paperwhite. On the DX, I am able to read it. Great book. Different perspectives on Catholic faith which gives me a lot to ponder on.But this book freezes on Kindle Paperwhite when I tried to read it.Please, publisher or whoever involved with digitizing this book, make it work with Paperwhite.09-04-2014 update.Updated version works flawlessly with my Kindle Paperwhite now. Thanks Catholic Way for improving the product.
