The writing is engaging and while I was hoping for something more technical it is down to earth enough for the average dog owner. I’m enjoying it immensely. As for the shipper? I was very disappointed in the monumentally moronic dog “trainer†booklet that was stuck in the back of my actual purchase. I can only guess it was a marketing ploy but a bad one. Don Sullivan and his “Perfect ... System†is NOT “essential reading†for anyone. Reading it actually ticked me off. Ignorant dog owners could waste their money on his defective pinch collars and ruin their dogs with his harsh aversive methods. Any trainer who requires more than a simple collar or head halter for training isn’t worth working with. As far as books go, just send us what we pay for, please, and keep unasked for material, ESPECIALLY TRAINING material out of purchases.
This book is very interesting for true crime lovers and for people interested in SAR, because it explains WHY and HOW a dog can sniff out cadavers, living people, items, and trails. It can get pretty clinical but that is important, too.
There's a reason that everyone in the K9 Scent World reads this book. If you are a student of scent detection, search and rescue or any other scent based work, the foundation in olfaction and how scent moves will set you up for a better partnership with your dog. Highly recommend. Even though it was written awhile ago and much has been learned since then, it is a great place to start!
It's hard to right a low star review on scent theory... or anything to do with working dogs. But, I must be honest. First off, I did learn several new things that really helped me understanding training and also some behavior of some of the dogs I have worked with trailing. I could understand better how the scent affects trailing dogs, tracking dogs, and air scenting dogs. Also, how the disciplines overlap sometimes, and also reinforced a few decisions I had made while working the dogs, but had wondered if I had done the right thing. I had, for the discipline that I was working on. It gave me some tips and pointers on what to do differently when training, and how to better decide what training I actually want to do (trailing, tracking, or area search). Why three stars? Well, first off, it was difficult to read. It wasn't very clear about diagrams and facts or numbers. It would have made a great basic script for an educational film, of course with adding and clarifying many of the points made. It didn't explain much of the how or why of scent theory. It didn't go into enough detail of chemical interactions and how scent is carried in the air. The section on scent and snow was lacking, in my opinion. Sometimes terms were explained, sometimes they weren't. I either had to have a dictionary with me or try to guess what they might mean. If the book was targeting scientifically minded people, it should have been more clear and gone into depth explaining each process. If it was targeting the common layman, it could have been more clear and used terms better understood or explained the terms used. The book basically made "files" in my brain for the subject, but left me wondering about many things. Some really good information, but could flow better and easily be a 300-page book, with all of the information I would like to see in it. diagrams were slightly unclear, and the diagram talking about scent rafts on clay and in grass seemed to be incongruent with the text on the difference of degrees at 2pm. The text indicates one number, the diagram indicates a drastically different number. It made it confusing. But, it whet my appetite for a more thorough examination of this important and fascinating subject, and helped me understand quite a few things that before were only question marks.
This is a great reference book about a dog's sense of smell. As another commenter already stated, it's not a nosework training book. The book is well organized and not very long. The book is very well written and easy to read, but contains a ton of information. My dog is really into nosework, so it was fun to learn about how he actually does nosework. I would definitely recommend this book.
I have to disagree with the other reviewers about the value of this book, especially the theoretical part. First, the book is way long on theory, by which I mean at least 70% deals with topics unrelated to *dogs* smelling or finding scent or being trained. Rather, we have to sit through long discussions on topics such as "what is a nose?" Okay, I'm exaggerating a little, but it does go into what is a cell, who discovered cells and when. What I know of the science they present is wrong and that makes me question the reliability of the rest. For instance, they give us a theory of scent (published in 1952) in which there are alleged to be 7 kinds of receptors for scents - oh please. The book was written before G-proteins were appreciated and it was known there are many many proteins specialized to recognize each scent, so the author is simply wrong. And by the way - who cares? What *is* excellent about this book is the distinction between "rafts" of odor (generated by the body, more robust and shorter lasting) and "vegetative" odors (caused by the crushing of vegetation and disturbance of soil) and how these are used for tracking (dog has nose smack on the trail very close to the ground) vs trailing (dog can be yards off the trail, generally downwind), vs. air scent, using the scent of the target only. Unfortunately, this material is squeezed into a small portion of the booklet (pp. 71-88; Chapter 9, "Working dogs on scent"). When it comes to training procedures for the puppy with a gifted nose (or an ambitious owner) and avoiding errors in training a pup, the author does not give anything useful: "Careful training by a knowledgeable handler can prevent this." No games or exercises are offered. So at this time I am still searching for a book that discusses *training* a dog to track or trail.
