Most Americans regard the Declaration of Independence as our country’s defining document, but historian H.W. Brand makes the argument that another text, Adam Smith’s capitalist manifesto “Wealth of Nations,” held as much influence in shaping our national identity. As Brand explains in “American Colossus: The Triumph of Capitalism, 1865-1900,” his page-turning, thesis-driven account of one of the most dramatic periods in American history, “the dual manifestos of 1776 were also dueling manifestos.”In sections that are organized more thematically than chronologically, Brand examines how the shifting dynamics between democracy and capitalism gave rise to our first titans of industry and money politics; swayed presidential elections and caused the creation and splintering of political parties; and informed the conversation on race, immigration and culture. “By the century’s end,” Brand observes, “the imperatives of capitalism mattered more to the daily existence of most Americans than the principles of democracy.”Brand’s laser focus on the push and pull between democracy and capitalism does somewhat limit the book’s scope and prevents it from being a comprehensive history of the era. The nascent women’s rights movement is mentioned only tangentially and the groundbreaking innovations in American literature not at all. Even the lives of black Americans in the post-Civil War South is couched mostly in terms of the economic impact of slavery’s abolishment.That said, this is a compelling, well-researched history book that makes the reader appreciate how democracy and capitalism aren't necessarily the same thing – and for much of the latter half of the 19th century, capitalism was the driving principle of American life, business and politics.

I really liked this book a lot. Thee are books pertaining to this period of American history, but this necessary book focuses on the benefits and success of capitalism and the role/impact of money more than the general history of the United States. Additionally, there were several stories or facts that I had just not read about in another book before, so this book certainly had a "Fresh" feeling to it. I did find myself wanting more about the 1890's than was discussed, but I'm not certain the book suffers from this, just a personal wish. I suppose my only "complaint" was that I also wish the book did cover the years of Roosevelt's presidency, just because I would of loved to have seen how HW Brands discussed those years pertaining to the topic he was writing about. Still, this is not a flaw of the book, certainly not something I will deduct a star over either. What HW Brands chose to write about, is top notch and I wholly recommend this book to anyone who wants a different look at America History from 1865-1900

H.W. Brands is on of my favorite historians and writer of history books for a general, as opposed to a specialist, audience. This book, like his others is very well written, and highly entertaining. However, this book is a bit unfocused, at least with respect to the subtitle - The Triumph of Capitalism, 1865-1900. Based on this subtitle, I was expecting a book that detailed the growth of American Industry, but while this is touched on, the book is much more of a general history of the US between 1865 and 1900. Entertaining - very much so; informative - very much so; what I expected - much less so.What is in the book -The book is divided into five parts, with titles that made me believe that this would be a book that conformed to the subtitle. These parts are titled:- The Rise of the Moguls (largely about the railroads)- Frontiers of Enterprise (about the Western US)- Gotham and Gomorrah (immigrants and big city politics)- The Finest Government Money Can Buy (political scandals)- The Decade of the Century (Jim Crow laws, the Spanish American War, McKinley and J.P. Morgan)As the above list indicates, this is a comprehensive picture of the time period covered by the book. However, the picture is one of vignettes, rather than an analysis of the period. For instance, there is a long description of the John Wesley Powel trip down the Colorado River in the section on the Frontiers of Enterprise. This section of the book was highly entertaining, but tended to defocus the narrative instead of clarifying it. There is a long section on the Chinese work on the Central Pacific, but comparatively little on the men who ran the railroad.The focus on fascinating stories permeates the book and is a reason why I enjoyed the book and would recommend it. However, this would not be the book for you if you were more interested in an analysis of the period. In most cases, the interesting story ends with a sentence or a few sentences that ties the story to the overall theme of the "Triumph of Capitalism", but the thread to quite diffuse. As an example, there is a long and very interesting section on the Great Chicago Fire of 1871, which is tied to the rest of the narrative by stating that the fire in destroying the city enabled a more modern one to be built - one where there was a greater density of taller buildings, setting the stage for the modern skyscraper.

I listened to this book on audio from my public library. I loved it so much that I now bought myself a copy. I initially read this book because I thought it would be good for me.... like vegetables. However this turned out to be an amazing and entertaining read about the history of capitalism in our country. It really put a human face and reality on the topic. Teddy Roosevelt is a complex scoundrel/hero. The robber barons remind me so much of some of some of our billionaire CEOs of today. You can see through our history the pull and tug between the worker-bees and the wealth producers. A see-saw that we continue to ride. Read it! It's good for you .... like vegetables, but it feels more like desert.
