From the Inside Flap
As one of the most consistently exciting writers to emerge in the last twenty-five years, Orson Scott Card has been honored with numerous awards, immersing readers in dazzling worlds only he could create. Now, in Enchantment, Card works his magic as never before, transforming the timeless story of Sleeping Beauty into an original fantasy brimming with romance and adventure. The moment Ivan stumbled upon a clearing in the dense Carpathian forest, his life was forever changed. Atop a pedestal encircled by fallen leaves, the beautiful princess Katerina lay still as death. But beneath the foliage a malevolent presence stirred and sent the ten-year-old Ivan scrambling for the safety of Cousin Marek's farm. Now, years later, Ivan is an American graduate student, engaged to be married. Yet he cannot forget that long-ago day in the forest--or convince himself it was merely a frightened boy's fantasy. Compelled to return to his native land, Ivan finds the clearing just as he left it. This time he does not run. This time he awakens the beauty with a kiss . . . and steps into a world that vanished a thousand years ago. A rich tapestry of clashing worlds and cultures, Enchantment is a powerfully original novel of a love and destiny that transcend centuries . . . and the dark force that stalks them across the ages. As a young boy, Ivan and his family emigrated from Russia to America. On the way to America, they stopped at Cousin Marek’s farm for a short while. It was at this farm where the course of Ivan’s life changed. Ivan loved to run. He was out of one of his runs when he stumbled across a meadow filled with leaves. When he got nearer, the leaves began to move and he realized they were filling a chasm. There appeared to be a pedestal in the middle with what looked like a woman lying atop it. At that point, something within the leaves started moving toward him and, frightened, Ivan ran away. The family moved to America soon after and Ivan left that part of his life behind. He became a scholar and followed in the steps of his father to learn historic languages. He decided to travel back to Russia to finish his doctorate studies. While there, he visits his Cousin Marek's farm again. The itch that had been his adventure in the woods as a boy begins to occur again and he realizes he must go see the chasm again. This time he is determined to see what the fuss was really about. He was sure that he remembered incorrectly and there wouldn’t be a pedestal and with a woman lying in wait and there wouldn’t be a monster under the leaves set out to get him. How wrong he was. Though, as an adult he was determined not to run away. Instead, he put his running to good use. The monster turned out to be a bear that was set to attack anyone that approached the pedestal. He decided to tire out the bear by giving chase around the chasm. Then he would leap to the pedestal to save the woman lying there. As with any fairy tale story, he gave the woman a kiss and she awoke. She quickly exclaimed in proto-Slavic, a long dead language, that Ivan should ask her to marry him. By luck, Ivan could understand her because this is a language that he and his father had been studying. He asked her to marry him and the bear (who had been climbing up the pedestal to attack), was forced to retreat. The curse had been broken with the princess awoken and betrothed.Ivan and Katerina (the sleeping Princess) cross a bridge that only Katerina can see and are transported back into the ninth century. Ivan arrives naked, as apparently nothing except the person themselves, can be brought through time. Ivan doesn’t understand the culture and the norms of the ninth century and tries to persuade Katerina to provide him with her shawl to cover up. She refuses, sighting it would be ghastly for a man to dress in women’s clothing. It would be better for him to walk through the village and arrive at her father’s (the King) house naked. This is just what he does. They arrive at the King’s house and everyone is excited that Katerina has returned. She’s been gone for months and no one could find her, though many tried. While it’s only been months for the local folk, it’s been many centuries to Ivan. It seems time carries on differently with the portal between the worlds. Ivan does not fit in the ninth century. He is lithe and spry from having been an athlete all his life. Men of the ninth century are bulky and muscular from having to work hard and Knights carrying shields and broad swords during battles. Everyone laughs at Ivan and believes that Katerina has made a poor choice for a husband. Katerina has her concerns as well, but is willing to marry Ivan for the sake of her people. It seems Baba Yaga, an evil witch, has cursed Katerina’s family. If there is no blood heir to the King’s line, then Baba Yaga will take the seat by force. But, she is held in check by others who are determined for a blood heir to rule the throne. As long as Katerina weds and produces a son, there will be an heir to the kingdom and Baba Yaga can make no move against the throne. But, she will do everything within her power (including moving through time) to ensure that Katerina doesn’t marry or produce a legitimate heir to the throne. This book travels through time from the 1990’s to the ninth century. We get to see people out of their time and out of their element and their reactions with different circumstances. While the tale sounds unbelievable and that it would read like a true children’s fairy tale, it doesn’t. Yes, there are witches and Gods and fairy tale characters, but it reads like a historical romance tale (with some modern twists). It's about Ivan and Katerina and the obstacles in their way to find true love. It doesn’t seem the unlikely cast of characters...a Russian Jewish American boy and his family in the 1990's, Gods and fairy tale characters, witches, Kings and princesses and mortal men in the ninth century....would fit together, but Card has woven the story together deftly. I was taken in by Ivan and Katerina’s story and thoroughly enjoyed the book.A quote:"Round and round it went. What good were the rules of time when the rules of magic contradicted them?"
After he wakes the sleeping princess with his kiss and promises to marry her in order to break the enchantment, what happens when they go off to live happily ever after?Ivan is a 10-year-old child in Russia. It's 1975. "Cousin Marek had a dairy farm in the foothills of the Carpathian Mountains. . . . Because this hill country was remote, strategically unimportant, and thinly populated, Communism here was mostly window dressing. . . . Cousin Marek had the room, the independent attitude, and enough surplus to take in a few hapless cousins who had decided to become Jews in order to get to the West."The story is a very entertaining mix of religion, technology, and magic. Where does one end and the next begin? It was at that age of 10 that Ivan first stumbled on the magic place in the woods where the princess lay. Of course he got scared and of course, he ran. But he never forgot. And he was drawn to return from the U.S. to Ukraine after becoming a young man and after becoming engaged to Ruthie. Magic happens fast. He found the princess Katerina, defeated the bear, promised to marry her and was led by her across the magic bridge to her home and time nearly a thousand years before he was born. You will enjoy this tale of a modern man trying to fit into a society where he is judged only by his ability to fight in war, or more realistically, his total apparent weakness and lack of fighting skills. The fact that the magic bridge removes all items from your time, including clothes, as you cross into the past creates some very funny scenes. Contrary to fairy tales, the people will not accept this weakling as king, and some plot to murder him, the sooner the better.Katerina and Ivan escape back across the bridge to modern times and now the tables are turned as she must adjust to a totally alien society. That comes after she has to suffer the fact that the bridge removed her clothes as she passed into the future, and it restored his normal clothes. Apparently there are very precise rules for magic. Almost like the rules for technology. Too soon they both find themselves fighting the terrible evil magic of Baba Yaga, who apparently followed them back. She even uses the jilted Ruthie to try to kill Ivan. Was it magic or not that the former girlfriend would actually want to kill the former fiancé who shows up with a strange, non-English-speaking new wife in tow and seems to have no explanation for it.You will find a lot of humor and entertainment in this creative story. It's a great story. The only disappointment was that Card did not develop his characters as well as he could have. He is such a skilled writer that I know he could have done so and the story would have been so much better for it. I wanted to "see" the strange tilt of a head, or the wrinkling of the brow, or perhaps the habitual movement of a hand to her hair, or the many other things that would bring out the personalities and behaviors of the characters and bring them to life. When you have a great story and you couple that with bringing characters to life, now that would be the ultimate magic story. For Honor: An Adventure of What Might Have Been: Book One of By Honor Bound
